No Movie

I'm usually indoors at sunset time watching a movie with my honey. Due to a mixed-up schedule this week, I was outdoors for last night's glorious light show in the sky. It was golden while the sun was up, but turned crimson after the sun dropped below the horizon. What a treat.

A Gentle Rain Caresses

My hiking group was caressed by a gentle rain as we tromped through the Makawao forest  this morning.

I love getting up on the mountainside and out of the summer heat down here by the beach.

If Only

It's always fun seeing Spotted Eagle Rays out in the ocean - they glide gracefully along and make swimming look so very effortless.

If only I could swim like that.

Transecting

Science classes visit our tide pools every year to learn about transecting.

More and more colorful floats have been appearing at the beaches.

It's the Turtle Wax

I saw lots more turtles out and about on my ocean swim this morning. Some had shells coated with algae while others had shiny clean shells. Maybe it's the turtle wax...

This White Tip Reef Shark seemed huge to me when it swam underneath; so why does it  look so tiny in this photo?

A Few More

Just a few random shots from this morning's walk through the neighborhood.

Almost Run Over

I saw lots of Green Sea Turtles on my ocean swim this morning, and they were completely unfazed by my presence. In fact I had to move out of the way of a couple of them to keep from being run over.

The school of thirty Racoon Butterfly Fish were still hanging in the same area as last week.

The Maui Pink Cap Swimmers encountered three Spotted Eagle Rays and one Manta Ray on our ocean swim this morning.

The water was glassy and warm, it was like swimming in a swimming pool, but one with fish and turtles and rays.

Between the Legs

Cub Scout Pack 81 and Boy Scout Troop 81 came down from Makawao School to conduct a fishing tournament for their members this morning. There were prizes for: first fish caught, smallest fish, and largest fish.

At the next beach along the shore a group of 40 - 50 teenagers were playing a game where some of them had to crawl between the legs of all the others.

Future Project

I saw lots of fishies and turtles on my ocean swim this morning.

I also heard reports of some very special fish sightings which I will investigate next week.

When Potash Calls . . .

It's understood that when Potash calls you have to answer. Nonetheless, your family misses you, Jordan.

Above and Below

Beauty can be found anywhere. Wild Passion Flowers seem to be going off everywhere right now, and Green Sea Turtles are also in abundance.

Aloha Rory

A big crowd showed up this morning to say "farewell" to Rory as she heads to the mainland to go to college.

It was fun seeing people who haven't been to a Sunday swim in a while, and also great to meet the Baldwin contingent.

Brightly Colored

I saw so many Sea Turtles this morning that I lost count. That's because I swam in my back yard where, strangely enough, I don't often swim.

Most Trumpetfish are not brightly colored, but I have been seeing more and more yellow ones.

Moderating Effect

The hottest summer day at the beach is 85 and the coldest winter day is 70. You gotta love the way the ocean keeps the temperature pretty much the same year round.

So Very Worth It

I saw lots of pretty fishies on my ocean swim this morning.

I really do not know why I am so often reluctant to get into the water, especially this time of year when the ocean is nice and warm. It is always so very worth it.

Wow. Way to go, young Olivia. Even some of our veteran swimmers have never swum down deep under the Arch.

Ocean conditions were exquisite and we encountered numerous sea creatures this morning.

Not Without A Fight

The Saltwater Lagoon at the Grand Wailea Resort has been a fixture for 25 years, but is about to change. The theme-park style resort is planning on deepening it and making it into a kind of snorkeling ride.

The Maui Ocean Center stepped in this morning to remove the hundreds of resident saltwater fish, some of which are going to the central Maui aquarium, and some of which will be reintroduced to the ocean. However, not all of the fish were willing to go without a fight.

Coral Bleaching has Returned

Our neighborhood Hawksbill Turtle has made friends with a little Wrasse who is now a fixture beneath the turtle's chin.

Coral bleaching has begun. It will be less noticeable this year because only live coral will bleach, all the coral that died last year will continue looking the same.

Aloe is growing vigorously because of recent rains from the continuous stream of hurricane remnants passing through.
